PCB Manufacturing Engineer
SpaceX is building technologies to enable human life on Mars. This role supports the Starship program as a highly technical manufacturing engineering position requiring practical experience across fabrication processes used in rockets and rocket engine avionics.
You will have broad knowledge of electronics fabrication methodologies including printed circuit boards (PCBs), engineering laminates, electrochemical processes, printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), and EEE components. You must be willing to take on new challenges in unfamiliar areas to enable the mission to Mars.
Responsibilities
- Serve as technical point of contact for assigned parts and assemblies, solving emergent challenges at suppliers and mitigating risk by addressing high-impact manufacturing and quality challenges
- Own new product introduction of new parts and assemblies, including identifying and reviewing suppliers, and developing reliable processes for ramping manufacturing to rate
- Collaborate with design, R&D, commercial supply chain, hardware reliability, and production teams to manage product portfolio
- Analyze production and process data to drive technical improvements, reducing risk, defects, and manufacturing lead times while improving cost and manufacturability
- Review issues on assigned parts, solve to root cause, implement changes at supplier or SpaceX, and re-source to new suppliers where appropriate
- Create and disposition issue tickets, working with engineering counterparts on re-work, repair, or use-as-is disposition
- Lead containment activities on assigned parts with cross-functional teams
- Drive supplier root cause failure analysis and corrective actions for quality gaps, escapes, or containments
- Support procurement team to strategically source parts matched with supplier capabilities by reviewing manufacturing processes and quality systems
- Become thoroughly familiar with assigned parts, processes, and their assembly, serving as primary point of contact for supply chain defects
- Demonstrate innovation, technical excellence, attention to detail, self-direction, and courage to push the technical envelope
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering discipline
- 1+ years experience in manufacturing or process engineering role
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Electronics manufacturing experience with PCBs, engineering laminates, electrochemical processes, PCBAs, and/or EEE components
- Working knowledge of PCBA processing: pick and place machines, reflow ovens, wave/selective soldering systems, x-ray and AOI systems, depanelization equipment
- Understanding of PCB stack up material selection and performance characteristics
- In-depth knowledge of industry specifications (IPC-2221, IPC-A-600, IPC-A-610)
- Experience drafting and presenting Design for Manufacturing (DFM) improvement suggestions
- Experience assessing supplier technical capability through onboarding and audits
- Working knowledge of supplier quality processes (PPAP, APQP, FAIR, etc.)
- Disciplined approach to problem solving (8D)
- Experience with quality systems (ISO 9000/TS/AS9100)
- Experience with 3D modeling/CAD software and engineering drawing creation
- Experience with Pareto analysis, root cause, corrective action, and PFMEAs
- Knowledge of lean concepts
- Knowledge of statistical techniques (Minitab, design of experiments, Six Sigma)
- Ability to communicate status and actions succinctly to all organizational levels
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to liaise cross-functionally and present to teams and management
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to work extended hours, some nights and/or weekends when needed
- Ability to travel up to 25-50% of work week (domestic and international)
- Valid driver's license
- U.S. citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or eligible to obtain required authorization from U.S. Department of State (ITAR)
Compensation
Level 1: $100,000.00 - $130,000.00
Level 2: $115,000.00 - $160,000.00
Actual level and base salary determined case-by-case based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
