Propulsion Build Engineer (Starship)
You will develop build processes, tooling, and designs for manufacturability of vehicle fluid systems, enabling high-rate production of Starship and Super Heavy. You will work directly with design and build teams, participate in physical builds, and drive the installation of propulsion systems.
What you will do
- Design manufacturing processes, techniques, and tools for efficient high-rate production
- Work with design engineering to simplify vehicle fluid systems
- Guide technicians, welders, and fabricators in building high-quality flight-ready hardware
- Coordinate development, qualification, and acceptance testing of systems and tooling
- Create CAD models and engineering prints for flight and tooling components
- Create and maintain build schedules
- Participate in design reviews with internal teams, suppliers, and customers
- Partner with engineering and production teams on improvements for current and next-generation vehicles
- Design tooling such as assembly aids, welding fixtures, and part fixturing
- Execute pressurized testing, cryogenic fluid work, and data analysis
- Sequence integration operations and advise on flight-critical hardware installation
- Act as a de-facto supervisor and advisor to production technicians and skilled labor partners
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or related discipline
- Hands-on project experience with fluid and/or mechanical systems
- 1+ years of manufacturing design experience (internship and academic experience counts)
Preferred experience
- 2+ years of experience with GD&T concepts
- Fluid mechanics: incompressible and compressible flow, heat transfer
- Experience with pressurized components: valves, regulators, tubes, pipes
- Mechanical design including structures, fluids calculations, and design considerations
- Process development, facility and line layouts, error-proofing
- Unigraphics NX and Teamcenter CAD and PLM systems
- Siemens NX or similar CAD and PLM packages
- Welding process development, maintenance, and improvement
- Automated and manual welding for piping and structural applications
Work conditions
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
- Physical dexterity required; flight hardware built in tight quarters
- Must be able to stand, kneel, crouch, twist, work in cramped positions and small openings, and climb
- Exposed to extreme outdoor environments: heat, cold, rain
- Exposed to fumes, odors, and noise
- Schedule varies with site operational needs; flexibility required
- Travel to remote build sites up to 10%
