Sr. Hardware Reliability Engineer (Build Reliability)
The Build and Hardware Reliability organization at SpaceX is an inter-disciplinary team committed to the reliability of flight components and production assemblies. You will collaborate with design, test, and manufacturing groups, guiding hardware from design to production and operation. You will use data to understand the factors that drive reliability, support quality objectives, and solve difficult technical problems while taking a system-level approach to prioritize issues for the vehicle as a whole. You will work hands-on in the office, factory floor, and lab.
Responsibilities
- Partner with design, test, and manufacturing to ensure reliability of avionics parts including controllers, RIOs, sensors, RF systems, power systems, solar arrays, and wire harnessing
- Track yield, test/inspection escapes, and ensure past failures and lessons learned are incorporated into new product introduction (NPI)
- Develop, implement, and validate Lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products, ensuring objective criteria and consistent quality goals
- Monitor product and process success through production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools
- Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is achieved; identify opportunities for risk reduction and removal of complexity; collaborate with integrated product teams on improvements and high-impact non-conformances
- Investigate failures in production, test, and flight; identify and mitigate root causes to reduce risk and improve reliability
- Perform structured electrical root cause analysis using schematics, test equipment, and inspection processes to inform design and manufacturing changes
- Perform gage repeatability and reproducibility studies to validate test systems used for product acceptance
- Contain suspect or non-conforming product; provide guidance to quality inspectors, technicians, supervisors, and engineers on quarantine and rework activities
- Support continuous improvement and Lean production through creation of standard rework and repair guides, removal of redundant inspection, and optimization of critical processes
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering physics
- 5+ years in manufacturing, quality, and/or design engineering
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Hands-on experience designing and/or troubleshooting PCBAs
- Experience supporting production and test of complex electromechanical assemblies
- Knowledge of quality tools: Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and problem-solving approaches
- Dedicated to adopting a Lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed
Compensation
Level 3: $135,000.00 - $215,000.00 base salary, determined on a case-by-case basis based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
Benefits include long-term incentives in the form of company stock or long-term cash awards, potential discretionary bonuses, employee stock purchase plan, comprehensive medical/vision/dental coverage, 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, 3 weeks of paid vacation, 10+ paid holidays per year, and paid sick leave.
