About the Role
As a senior member of SpaceX's Radiation Effects team, you will ensure avionics hardware performance across our fleet of vehicles (Dragon, Falcon, Starship, Lunar Human Landing System) through extreme and varied radiation environments. The Radiation team performs exhaustive analysis, design, and test at component, board, unit, and subsystem levels, interfacing with design, manufacturing, integration, and mission operations teams across all programs.
Responsibilities
- Support cross-discipline design and system engineers by providing radiation test results, analysis reports, requirements guidance, and recommendations for mitigating radiation effects
- Develop component databases and applications for radiation test data used across programs
- Work with supply chain and component reliability teams to ensure radiation test data is available and accessible to design engineers
- Review PCN changes to maintain radiation qualification status
- Develop testing and reporting standards for component and flight PCBA radiation tests
- Refine preferred components across programs in collaboration with supply chain and reliability teams
- Collaborate with circuit design, electronics manufacturing, and software teams to analyze and improve test coverage
- Make recommendations for design improvements, process enhancements, and data collection methods
- Establish requirements for component procurement specifications
- Comply with all radiation regulatory requirements for radiation safety
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
- 5 or more years of professional experience in the radiation effects field
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Full stack web development experience including Python, SQL, JavaScript, HTML
- Single event effects risk calculations
- Radiation effects modeling, testing, and analysis experience
- Experience writing scripts to control test hardware
- Proficiency with hardware blueprints, schematics, and circuit functions
- Component engineering or component reliability experience
- Strong mathematics and statistics knowledge
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with avionics hardware including integrated circuits, PCBA boards, sensors/transducers, functional troubleshooting, and defect detection
- Radiation dose safety training
Working Conditions
Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones.
Compensation
Level 3: $140,000 - $230,000 base salary (actual salary determined on a case-by-case basis based on knowledge, skills, education, and experience).
