About the Role

Stratolaunch is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (Level II, Sr-, or Staff-level) to develop and improve avionics systems for air-launched, hypersonic flight vehicles. You will work in a multi-disciplined team to generate requirements, design, analyze, manufacture, test, and integrate avionics systems for the Talon testbeds.

What You'll Do

• Design electronic enclosures for avionics components and create 3D CAD models
• Perform structural, heat transfer, and thermal hand calculations and basic analyses simulations
• Perform and support requirements development for avionics systems and units
• Create production drawings and collaborate with machine shops to ensure designs are manufacturable
• Support manufacturing to ensure correct unit installation
• Develop and optimize packaging processes to improve yield and reliability
• Support test planning, failure analysis, hardware and software qualification, and flight testing
• Prepare content for and present at design and test readiness reviews
• Communicate regularly with program Avionics, Structures, and Manufacturing leads

Required Experience

• Significant experience with electronics and avionics packaging
• Experience performing structural, heat transfer, and thermal hand calculations and basic analyses
• Experience with metallic structures design, analysis, and manufacturing
• Experience with technical aerospace work, including working with vendors
• Knowledge of electronics packaging, mechanical design, mechanical manufacturing, avionics manufacturing, and/or aircraft systems
• Experience with risk management and critical path workflow
• Experience working in small engineering teams with multiple responsibilities per member
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Ability to work independently and prioritize tasking to meet business goals
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities
• Ability to acquire and maintain a security clearance

Required Computer Skills

• 3D CAD experience (Siemens NX and Teamcenter preferred, Solidworks acceptable)
• 3D Simulation experience (NX Design Simulation or Solidworks Simulation)
• MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• Configuration management systems such as JIRA, GIT, JAMA

Preferred Experience

• Environmental test support (vibration, thermal, shock) and discrepancy resolution
• Hands-on fabrication in aerospace environment
• Transitioning prototype programs into Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP)
• Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) improvement efforts
• Hypersonic and/or supersonic vehicle development
• Air-launched vehicle development
• Composite structures design, analysis, and manufacturing
• FEMAP and Nastran
• Active S, TS, and/or SCI security clearance

Education and Experience

• Level II: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 2-5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Sr-level: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 5-10 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Staff-level: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 10-20 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Work Environment

• Position based in Mojave, CA
• May require alternative shift work and/or weekend work
• Travel as needed to support the department, estimated less than 5 percent
• May involve operation of company vehicles as part of assigned duties
