Systems Engineer, Payload Electronics & Integration Verified today
About the Role
You will ensure seamless system-level thinking across Turion's integrated payload stack. You serve as the technical bridge between payload, electrical engineering (EE), FPGA, and firmware teams, translating high-level system requirements into actionable hardware and software specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive system-level thinking across integrated software, firmware, and electronics, ensuring payload architectures meet functional, performance and reliability requirements.
- Act as the primary technical bridge between the payload team and the EE, FPGA, and firmware engineering disciplines.
- Document and manage Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for data links, power distribution and command/control telemetry.
- Collaborate on hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing, board-level bring-up strategies, and payload integration test plans to validate and de-risk electronic subsystems early.
- Participate in interdisciplinary troubleshooting and root cause analysis to diagnose complex anomalies at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and software.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3 to 6+ years of experience in systems engineering, electrical engineering, embedded systems, or a closely related multidisciplinary field.
- Proven ability to analyze systems past the component layer, with deep understanding of how firmware architectures impact hardware performance and vice versa.
- Familiarity with Python, C/C++, or MATLAB for data analysis, hardware automation, or system modeling.
- Strong familiarity with embedded systems concepts, microcontrollers, FPGA development workflows and low-level firmware/software architectures.
- Experience with electro-optical (EO/IR) payloads, sensor integration, or camera systems.
- Working knowledge of digital electronics, power budgeting, and common communication protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, Ethernet, or High-Speed SerDes).
- Exceptional communication and collaborative skills with a track record of translating complex concepts between hardware engineers and software developers.
- Proficiency with systems engineering tracking tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS, Jira).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in aerospace, robotics, defense, or high-reliability consumer electronics.
- Experience interfacing EE, FPGA, and firmware with optical hardware.
- Experience developing automated test scripts (e.g., Python, PyTest) or frameworks for hardware-in-the-loop validation and continuous integration.
- Familiarity with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) or embedded Linux architectures.
- Hands-on experience using high-speed oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers to debug hardware-to-firmware communication boundaries.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $125,000 to $175,000 USD.
Full-time employees receive: equity in Turion Space, comprehensive medical/dental/vision coverage, 401(k) plan with 3% employer contribution, paid vacation and sick days, paid parental leave, employee assistance program, professional development opportunities, and team building activities.
Requirements
This position may access technology and software subject to U.S. export controls (ITAR). Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required authorization from the U.S. Department of State.
Employees may be asked to support alternate shifts, extended shifts, and/or travel during peak work periods.
