Controls Engineer II (PLC)

Ursa Major designs and delivers propulsion and defense systems for aerospace and national security applications. We are seeking a Controls Engineer II to drive the design, delivery, and maintenance of custom automated equipment and facilities for our propulsion production manufacturing operations.

You will develop deep understanding of personnel-operated and unattended processes involving hazardous materials and operations. The scope spans from benchtop test fixtures to facility-scale equipment and multi-campus monitoring. You will work closely with Manufacturing, Test, Quality, Safety, and product owners to implement solutions that enable safe, robust, and efficient propulsion production.

Responsibilities

  • Design safety-first systems handling hazardous fluids, powders, energetics mixtures, high pressures and voltages
  • Understand functional test requirements of propulsion subassemblies and components to deliver production equipment
  • Act as controls stakeholder from conceptualization through specification, design, build, deployment and validation of automated production equipment
  • Participate in equipment development considering product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time constraints
  • Integrate motion systems and third-party solutions into Ursa Major control platforms
  • Integrate PLC-based equipment into SCADA layer
  • Commission equipment hands-on, working alongside engineers and technicians
  • Generate documentation including electrical schematics, P&ID, operator manuals, and work instructions for operation, troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Contribute to internal production equipment standards and requirements documentation

Required Qualifications

  • BS degree or higher in engineering (Mechatronic, Chemical, or Mechanical preferred), or equivalent experience
  • Experience designing single and multi-axis custom motion systems
  • Experience with test and process system design
  • Experience working with PLCs (Siemens S7 or other)
  • Experience developing systems for personnel-operated and unattended equipment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work flexibly in fast-paced environment, collaborating across departments
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple stakeholder requirements and deliver projects on time
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing for long periods, working on ladders, kneeling, crouching, working in tight spaces, and lifting up to 25 lbs

Preferred Experience

  • First-principles approach to instrumentation and process equipment
  • Building automation and data acquisition
  • Continuous and batch process system design
  • Production in ISO 9001 or AS9100 certified organizations
  • Ignition SCADA and HMI
  • Machine network design and industrial communications
  • Designing industrial electrical control panels (Eplan or other)
  • Building industrial electrical control panels
  • Designing and building high pressure fluid systems
  • NFPA, NEC, ASME piping codes and related standards
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), LOPA, System Safety and Hazards Analysis
  • Equipment validation, IQ, OQ, PQ, Gauge R&R

Compensation and Benefits

Base compensation range: $90,000 to $113,000, determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
