About the Role

Ursa Major is hiring a Senior Materials Engineer to develop next-generation thermal protection systems (TPS) for solid rocket motors. You will design and conduct experiments, analyze system components, and provide materials recommendations to engineering teams. Aerospace systems experience extreme temperatures, pressures, and corrosive combustion. Your material selection and analysis will ensure components survive these conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support material sourcing and selection for thermal protection systems in SRM applications
  • Develop and analyze thermal models for TPS design evaluations based on thermodynamic and heat transfer principles
  • Conduct laboratory-scale experiments in simulated environments to validate materials and design
  • Define bonding and mechanical properties for integration of materials into SRM systems
  • Support design development and manufacturing validation for process improvement
  • Drive current fabrication processes and adapt technology for next-generation projects
  • Collaborate across teams to establish system requirements and manufacturing development goals
  • Document processes and write work instructions for future development

Requirements

  • BS in materials engineering with approximately 5 years' experience (master's degree preferred)
  • Knowledge of material properties, heat treatment, metallurgy, or related discipline
  • Comfortable working in laboratory settings and operating laboratory equipment
  • Previous experience with elastomeric compounds, ceramics, ablative composites, and graphite materials
  • Comfortable handling hazardous materials
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident)

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary: $115,000 - $136,000, determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Full-time exempt position.
